New Cumnock mum dies of swine flu

SWINE flu has claimed the death of an Ayrshire mum.

The 45-year-old New Cumnock woman is believed to be the latest person to die from the H1N1 virus.

She had serious underlying health problems.

The lady died at Crosshouse Hospital last Wednesday.

Her death brings the total of number of swine flu deaths in Ayrshire and Arran to three.

Nicola Sturgeon, health secretary, said: “I am sorry to have to announce another death and my thoughts are with the patient's loved ones at this distressing time.

“Fortunately in the vast majority of H1N1 cases, most people have fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery within a week.”

Ms Sturgeon continued: “However, we must all remain vigilant and I would underline the importance of maintaining hygiene standards. Please seek medical advice immediately if you believe you are at greater risk of suffering influenza complications.”

Meanwhile, a rumoured outbreak of swine flu at Carrick Academy has been denied.

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “A higher number of pupils than normal have been absent from Carrick Academy this week due to seasonal illnesses which can occur at this time of year.

“Staff at the school will, as is the normal procedure, continue to monitor the absence levels.”

The swine flu vaccine is currently being rolled out to those eligible for it.

Ms Sturgeon added: “Vaccination is our best defence against this virus and I urge everyone who is in the priority groups to accept the vaccine when invited to do so.

“The vaccination programme is being rolled out, but please wait until you are invited before visiting your GP for the vaccine.”

Anyone concerned about flu-like symptoms contact your GP for advice or call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24.
