HE’S a plumber, turned cabbie, turned handyman.
And Colin O’Lone has finally found his ideal career.
The multi-skilled Ayr man has set up his own business fixing other people’s DIY disasters.
Colin, 42, explained: “I had qualified and worked as a plumber for 25 years before deciding to do something different and drive a black cab in South Ayrshire.
“About six years ago it was easy-money, but now there are too many cabs on the ranks.
“That, and the recession, has made it impossible to make a living. And I’ve a wife and three young children – Shaun, Leon and Connie – to support.”
Colin decided to take the plunge when more and more friends and family members asked him to help in their home.
From wall papering, to flooring, to fitting kitchens, Colin discovered he could do it all and took the plunge earlier this year.
His new business is slowly but surely taking off.
Colin said: “I’ve kept my hand in doing the odd DIY jobs for friends and family – like fitting a new bathroom and kitchen, decorating, and even fitting laminate flooring. That’s given me enough confidence to try many other jobs apart from plumbing.
“I’ve always taken great pride in the work I do, and it’s satisfying to see the look of gratitude on customers’ faces when they acknowledge a job well done.
“I really enjoy what I do, it’s a big change from the long days sitting in a taxi. This is much more hands on.”
