Banned from road over 100mph race

A PAIR of drivers reached speeds of up to 100mph when they raced each other on one of Ayr’s busiest roads.

But Nathan Cushley and Christopher Parker walked free from Ayr Sheriff Court despite admitting the dangerous stunts.

The boys were showing off to their passengers as they drove at high speeds between the Holmston Roundabout and Whitletts Roundabout on January 25 this year.

Cushley, 21, and Parker, 20, both of Ayr, pled guilty to dangerous driving.

Depute fiscal Chris Donnelly told Sheriff John Montgomery that the young men were spotted by police at the Whitletts Roundabout at around 10pm.

Mr Donnelly added that Cushley’s black Honda Civic was in the lead, closely followed by Parker’s red Ford Focus.

Officers followed the two cars for about 1.4 miles and noticed that they were having to keep speeds of up to 100mph in order to keep up with Cushley and Parker.

When they were stopped by police, Cushley and Parker were both found to have one passenger each.

Defence lawyer Ian Gillies said: “Neither of them has really any excuse. They know it was stupid.

“Anything could have happened and they put themselves and other road users in danger.”

Sheriff John Montgomery banned Cushley, of Drumellan Road, and Parker, of Fulton Place, for 12 months and ordered them to pay a fine of £500 each.

When Mr Gillies suggested that they pay the fine at £10 per week, Sheriff Montgomery replied: “I think they can afford a bit more than that, given that they won’t be spending money on petrol.”
