IT took 6hrs and 34mins to complete the 44-mile River Ayr course.
But Charles Martin was thrilled to be first.
He was one of 85 people who took part in the annual River Ayr Way Challenge.
Charles was among 25 ultra runners who pounded the scenic course.
But despite his best efforts, he narrowly missed breaking Bobby Miller of Troon Tortoises’ record from last year by just 10 minutes.
And the 60 walkers were no less competitive.
The clocked up 22 miles on the Saturday before resting their weary legs at Catrine House caravan park.
The following day they ignored the blisters to complete the course, with Jacqui Stewart and her team finishing in 10hrs 30 mins, smashing their record of last year by a full 40 minutes.
Councillor Kathy Morris was very impressed by the efforts of those who took part.
She said: “This was such a positive weekend. Everyone who took part had a wonderful time and many new friendships were made.
“The success of the challenge, which was due to the hard work of event organiser Louise Kyle from countryside services, will ensure that it will become an annual event.”
And she revealed that the event is expected to attract around 100 runners and 100 walkers in 2010.
Councillor Morris added: “Year on year, the number of participants has increased and next year we hope to attract 100 ultra runners and 100 walkers.
“I am now looking forward to the awards ceremony which will be held at the start of October, where I will be able to congratulate all the competitors and present them with their medals.
“All sponsorship money raised by the competitors will also be presented to this year’s nominated charity, The Fairy Box.”
