High standards bring crowds in to Ayr Flower Show

AYRSHIRE Horticultural Society chairman John Walker is always delighted to see new visitors and old friends at the show.

“This is a year round effort, balancing finances on the one hand, together with exhibitors' and visitors' needs on the other,” said John.

“At the end of those 12 months, the show comes together with the aid of literally hundreds of local volunteers and much appreciated support from sponsors and other local funders, including South Ayrshire Council – who allow us the use of this beautiful estate – and supporters too numerous to mention here.”

He explained that Ayr Flower Show is unique in the UK calendar of flower shows and gardening festivals – attracting not only Chelsea winning exhibitors from the cream of UK horticulture, but the hundreds of competitive and junior classes draw thousands of entries, which allows Ayr to retain the success of a community spirited effort.

He added: “Whether you come to see an award-winning display from some of the nurseries who make the long journey here from the south of England, or to take part in a painting masterclass with local children; Ayr Flower Show caters for everyone, young and old, enthusiastic gardener, or onlooker, with a full round of entertainment for an enjoyable day out.

“Over the past few years, as a board, we have taken steps to reinvigorate the show, and this process continues this year.”

John went on: “With the greatly appreciated funding aid of EventScotland we have put together a show with something for everyone.

“There are stunning courtyard gardens, created for the show in the course of a little over a week, allied with the usual array of colour of the Grand Floral Marquee.

“The Scottish Begonia Championships will once again be a showcase of colour and breathtaking blooms.

“Again, we have a range of speciality food exhibitors selling produce to take home – or enjoy at the show if you just can't wait.”
