WORK has started on a £6.75 million upgrade of 144 homes in one of Ayr’s toughest communities.
The five-year project will see the area transformed and the houses dramatically improved.
The first stage of the ambitious project got underway on Monday.
Three blocks of maisonettes will be upgraded with some getting extra rooms and with many receiving bigger kitchens and bedrooms.
Gas central heating will be installed in all of them and insulation improved to cut heating bills.
This phase is expected to be complete by the spring of 2011.
South Ayrshire’s housing spokesman, Councillor Douglas Campbell, said: “This is an exciting project that will really make a difference to the lives of the residents.
“It clearly shows the council’s commitment to improving our housing stock and making sure that all our houses comply with the government’s Scottish Housing Quality Standard. During the Council’s initial £1.4m of refurbishment on three blocks of houses in Glenmuir Road, the external fabric of the blocks will be upgraded and improved and the existing deck access arrangement, which has caused problems in the past will be changed.”
And Eamonn McGarvey from Apollo, the company who will carry out the work, said: “We expect to have completed these works by the spring of 2011.
“We are looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on both the homes themselves and the quality of life for the tenants.”
Residents who own their own homes will be responsible for paying their share of the cost of renovation.
