Ayr's biggest paper round up for sale

SIXTY years after his dad started the family business and Billy Gordon reckons it’s time for a change.

The dad of two has put Ayr’s biggest newspaper delivery outfit up for sale.

And he’s looking forward to putting his feet up.

Billy’s decision follows a lifetime delivering the news to the doors of countless customers.

He said: “The business has given me and my sister a good living for years, but it’s time to move on.”

The family’s long association with newspapers started when dad David opened Falkland Store in 1950.

He employed just one paper boy, delivering the news to neighbouring homes.

When the Craigie scheme was built it opened up a whole new market for the Gordon family.

Billy, whose distinctive van is a regular sight around Ayr, explained: “My dad went round the scheme on his bike canvassing for new customers.”

When Billy and his sister Jennifer took over the business they moved away from the shop to concentrate on the delivery side of the business.

And over the years the pair built up an impressive client list, delivering thousands of newspapers to hundreds of homes and businesses every week.

Care homes, garages and hotels are among their many customers.

Billy went on: “My dad started out with one paper boy and we ended up with about 12.

“It has been a good wee business.

“I’m looking for someone to come along and keep it going, it would be a shame for it to fold.”
