TURNER’S Bridge is to be given a £230,000 facelift.
The Ayr landmark has been closed to the public while work is carried out.
Pensioners living in the high flats on the north bank of the river have been told that it will be October before work is complete.
Councillor Peter Convery revealed that the upgrade will mean a big improvement to the vital link across the River Ayr.
The steelwork of the bridge will be repaired and repainted, the concrete deck slabs will be partially replaced and an anti-slip surface installed.
New lights will also be erected to improve safety.
Councillor Convery said: “Turner’s Bridge is a vital link to and from the town centre and is very well used by members of the public.
“The council fully acknowledges that its temporary closure will in the short-term cause significant inconvenience to certain members of the public, particularly those living in the vicinity of the bridge north of the river.”
But he offered his reassurance that the end result will be worth the effort.
He added: “It is however hoped that those affected will appreciate the essential nature of the refurbishment works, which in the long-term will ensure that the bridge can be safely used by people for many years to come, and at the same time greatly enhance the appearance of this landmark structure in the centre of Ayr.”
