MSP Cathy is heading for the hills

SHE may be used to lively challenges in the Scottish Parliament.

But now Cathy Jamieson is swapping the debating chamber for the Himalayan hills for her latest adrenaline rush.

For the Cumnock, Carrick and Doon Valley MSP is taking part in a 100km trek on the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal.

She won’t be alone though – 22 young people in care will be joining Cathy on the once in a lifetime trip.

The charity challenge is being organised by Who Cares? Scotland – the charity providing advocacy and support for looked-after young people.

The trek is part of their 30th anniversary celebrations, which aim to tackle stigma and celebrate success.

And Cathy knows only too well how valued the charity is, since she is a former director.

Cathy said: “I am always up for a challenge and this year is no different.

“With the global economic situation having an impact, charities and voluntary organisations are also feeling the pinch.

“So this year, I will be making a big effort to support Who Cares? Scotland.

“I will be sharing the challenge of the Bhara Pokhari 100km trek in Nepal in late October to early November this year – and will be spending my birthday somewhere in the mountains of Nepal.”

The trek will see the youngsters embark on an exciting 11-day trip.

After flying from Scotland to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, the young Scots will set off on a circular 100km trek, travelling through remote villages and some of the world’s most dramatic scenery.

Expedition leader Grant Gilroy, a regional manager with Who Cares? Scotland, says the Bhara Pokhari trek is set amongst spectacular views of the south faces of the largest peaks in the Himalayas.

He added: “Foreigners seldom take this particular route and consequently the Nepalese villagers greet visitors with a great deal of friendliness.”
