Catrine historic building in danger

ONE of Catrine’s most historic buildings could be torn down if the owners don’t take quick action.

The Volunteer Arms has been allowed to rot over the years and is now an embarrassing eyesore in the town centre.

Despite having several enforcement orders served on them, the owners of the category C building have done little to restore it.

Most recently, a dangerous buildings notice was served on the owners requesting that proposals be developed to retain the building facade and demolish only the rear of the building.

The owners have since appointed a structural engineer to develop preservations works.

But they have failed to comply with the instructions within the timescale set by the council.

The council has now instructed work to be carried out to retain the facade on both Bridge Street and Mill Square.

However, full demolition may be the only option if the building turns out to be structurally unstable.

Councillor Jim Roberts said: “This has been a long outstanding problem for Catrine but we are finally taking action and are looking at all options available to us.

“It is very disappointing that the owners have not complied with the enforcement notice.

“The council have to take it to the next step which may ultimately involve demolition but I’m pleased that we are still examining if the facade can be retained.”
