Police warning over Open traffic

POLICE are predicting that 130,000 people will travel to Turnberry for the Open Championship next month.

And they warn drivers that they will face delays if they don’t follow designated roads.

Alternative routes will also be signposted to allow other motorists to avoid golf traffic.

Superintendent Niven Rennie, who is in charge of road policing across Strathclyde, pointed out: “On both the practice and competition days, traffic reports will be broadcast on local and national radio and full details of the frequencies for the radio stations will be indicated on the designated routes.

“Drivers who fail to follow the directions or who use alternative routes to those signposted are likely to encounter delays.

“We’re advising that motorists heading to the Championship follow the specific ‘Open’ signs that have been provided by the AA.”

Turnberry will host the 138th championship from Sunday, July 12 until Sunday, July 19.

Up to 40,000 golf fans are expected to attend on each of the four championship days alone.

Parking has been provided for 13,000 cars every day at the venue.

And police have been working around the clock with South Ayrshire Council and Amey Highways to ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible.

Superintendent Rennie also advised golf fans attending the Open to take a few simple precautions to stop themselves from becoming victims of crime.

He revealed the officers will also be stationed at the event offering car security advice.

Superintendent Rennie added: “I would advise all those attending by car to make sure that no valuables are left in view.

“Any items that can be removed should be safely locked away in the boot.

“It’s also important to remember that mobile phones are not allowed into the event and those attending the Championship will be searched for phones prior to entry, and as there is no re-admission to the venue, we’re advising that mobile phones are either left at home or locked in cars, out of sight.”

He went on: “Most car crime is opportunist, therefore I would urge members of the public to be vigilant not only this week but throughout the year.”
