A PETITION with 4500 signatures calling for a timetable for a Maybole bypass and for further safety improvement work on the southern A77 has been given to the Scottish government.
Ayr MSP John Scott presented the petition to Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson at the Scottish Parliament.
The petition was organised by Councillor Bill Grant, the Conservatives’ Westminster candidate for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, and backed by Mr Scott.
Mr Scott said: “The petition backing a bypass for Maybole and more improvements to the A77 south of Ayr has been a huge success, gathering support from right across Carrick and further afield.
“It underlines the strength of feeling in the area that these vital road projects need to be delivered in the interests of local people and local communities.”
CouncillorŠGrant said: “The case for a bypass for Maybole is simply overwhelming. It is backed by local people, by all the main political parties and by the council.
“The message from southern Ayrshire couldn’t be any clearer – everyone agrees that this investment is needed and all that’s lacking is the green light from ministers.
“It’s time for the go-ahead to be given so that Maybole can be freed from the traffic gridlock that has gripped it for so many years, so that South Ayrshire’s economy can get the boost that would come from enhanced transport links through Carrick and so that local communities from Ayr to Ballantrae can benefit from safety improvements to the southern A77.”
