In the running for top youth award

HE’S already a well-known name in the community.

And at 18, Brian Borland is racking up the awards for his hard work on behalf of others.

First it was fellow youngsters, as he fought to get their voice heard in the adult world.

Now Coylton lad Brian is set to be recognised for his hard graft at home.

The dedicated teen combines his schoolwork with helping to care for his ill mum.

Not to mention his rising stardom in the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Now Brian is in the running to be named the country’s Young Person of the Year.

And he revealed: “For me, I learn new skills.

“It also helps the community come together as young people look up to me and ask how they can get involved.

“I enjoy helping around the house, and when dad has to go to work I need to stay as mum really can’t be on her own. I help her tidy up and prepare meals.”

Brian’s work in and around Ayrshire for the youth parliament is also making him a popular face.

He recently met with South Ayrshire councillors to discuss the parliament’s national campaign ‘Being Young is Not a Crime’.

Now his positive work could bag him a top level gong in the Young People of the Year contest.

Competition founder Tony Gearing said: “Brian is a youth work dynamo.

“We want to have nominations for more South Ayrshire young people who give to the community – either local, national, or both.”

And Tracy Winner-Scott, of South Ayrshire Council, added: “Brian is always the first person to take on responsibility for planning and running events.

“I have found him to be an amazing asset to any youth work programme and I know that I can fully trust and rely on him 100 per cent.”
