A SCHOOL is battling to keep one of its oldest sporting traditions alive.
Hockey stars of the future have honed their skills at Marr College since 1935.
But a lack of willing coaches means the school’s proud hockey history is under threat.
Head teacher Paul Deacon has launched a desperate search for new blood to stop the sport from dying.
And he admits Marr’s reputation as one of Scotland’s top hockey schools hangs in the balance.
Mr Deacon confessed: “Staff have unfalteringly volunteered their efforts, coaching and umpiring expertise over the past 30 years.
“However, time marches on. During the past seven years the burden of organising, coaching and competitions for eight hockey teams has become onerous for two members of staff.
“Parents, former pupils and staff have all pitched in to help run the eight teams.
“This has ensured the continual success of hockey in the immediate future but a longer term plan is needed.”
Marr are five time Scottish champions in the sport and have built a reputation as one of the country’s leading lights.
Along with their renowned rugby setup, the school has always counted on a strong sporting base.
But parents now fear their children could miss out if hockey coaching bites the dust.
A committee of parents and staff has been formed as Marr tries to stop the sport from dying off.
And councillors have joined the calls for a rescue act and stressed the importance of the sport surviving.
Troon councillor Phil Saxton revealed: “Marr College is renowned for its rugby, cricket and hockey and have former pupils and existing students playing at national level.
“This sport is looked forward to by most girls when leaving primary school to attend secondary school at Marr.
“I would assume all Troon councillors will do their utmost to try and retain this sport within Marr College and I intend to call a meeting with councillors, South Ayrshire Council educational officers, the head of Marr College and teaching staff to try and resolve this matter as quickly as practically possible.”
