As the woman moved to another carriage she was kicked on the back by one of the trio, who followed her and punched her on the face.

The two little girls got off the train at Prestwick town station.

PC Alan Smith said: “This was an exceptionally cowardly and unprovoked attack on a woman going to the aid of younger girls.

“I know there were a number of passengers on the train who would have witnessed the assault.

“I am anxious to speak with anyone who may have information regarding the identity of those involved to contact me as a matter of urgency.”

The main suspect is described as being 15 to 16 years old, 5ft 6” tall with shoulder length dyed black hair, a tanned complexion and crooked teeth. She was wearing a pink top and jeans.
