A HEROIN addict who robbed an 80-year-old woman in broad daylight has been jailed.
Peter Goudie admitted the sickening attack and claimed it was borne out of desperation to fund his habit.
But his excuse cut no ice with Sheriff John Montgomery, who sentenced the 24-year-old butcher to 210 days behind bars.
Goudie, who has three previous convictions under the misuse of drugs act including one for dealing heroin, earlier pled guilty to the robbery.
Goudie watched the old lady withdraw money from the Clydesdale Bank in Ayr’s Alloway Street on February 19 this year.
He then followed her through the Arran Mall as she made her way to her car.
He pounced and grabbed the terrified woman’s bag before running off.
Goudie was caught when disgusted members of the public who saw what happened gave chase.
Chief Inspector Andy Sweeney praised the members of the public who came to the elderly victim’s assistance.
He said: “It is both sad and disappointing to hear about pensioners being robbed when they are simply going about their daily business in Ayr.
“However, the actions of several members of the public in this instance is encouraging.
“It shows that a community spirit still exists in the town.”
At Ayr Sheriff Court this week, Sheriff Montgomery said it was an appalling crime and jailed Goudie, of Glencairn Road in Ayr.
