Thug waved knives through letter box

A KNIFE wielding maniac chased a stranger through the street threatening to kill him.

Mad man Kevin Barrett then waved two knives through a woman’s letterbox after she came to investigate the commotion.

Barrett was jailed for two and a half years at Ayr Sheriff Court this week after he admitted the terrifying ordeal.

The court was told that at around 6.30pm on December 27, Barrett approached a man in Argyll Park in Ayr and asked him if his name was Chris.

When the man said no, Barrett produced two knives.

The victim sprinted away and into a communal close in Duke Terrace.

He managed to gain entry to a flat on the top floor.

But Barrett followed him and began banging on the door.

He shouted: “Come on then, I’m going to kill the first one I see.”

At that point, a woman in the downstairs flat heard the commotion and went into the hallway.

When she looked upstairs, she locked eyes with Barrett and saw that he had the knives.

The woman quickly ran back into her home and phone the police.

But Barrett ran back down the stairs and put one of the knives through the letterbox and started waving it around.

Police arrived and arrested Barrett before he managed to harm anyone.

His defence lawyer, Ian Gillies told Sheriff John Montgomery that his client had been watching a game of football in various pubs throughout the day and that he was very drunk.

Mr Gillies added that Barrett’s behaviour was very bizarre and that the first he became aware of it was when he woke up in King Street police station.

Sheriff Montgomery jailed the yob for two years and six months.
