Police purge on dodgy drivers in Ayrshire

TRAFFIC cops were out in force to target drivers who flout the law.

The focus day last Friday saw 30 speeding offenders caught, 51 seat belt offenders and 9 mobile phone users throughout Ayrshire.

They now face fines of up to £1000 and possible disqualification.

Superintendent Niven Rennie, head of road policing for Strathclyde police said: “I cannot believe that 20 years of the legislation being in place, and despite the numerous safety messages, people are still flouting the law by not wearing a seatbelt.

“Wearing one should be second nature to everyone by now.

“Speeding is also a major issue and again, I find it extremely disappointing that motorists do not seem to acknowledge the serious consequences both for themselves and for those whose lives they put at risk.”

Supt Rennie continued: “Too many drivers continue to drive irresponsibly and this behaviour needs to be tackled head on.

“This may have been a national day of action butthis is something we will vigorously enforce 365 days a year.”
