A 14-year-old schoolboy was stabbed in the classroom of his Ayr school.
Police and ambulance crew rushed to a school following the attack shortly after 9am on Monday morning.
A fellow 14-year-old pupil has been charged in connection with the incident.
He appeared in private at Ayr Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with attempted murder.
The two pupils are both in third year and it is understood that the attack happened in the woodwork area of the school.
Linda Smith, 42, works at a nearby shop.
She said: “Paramedics brought the boy who had been stabbed out on a stretcher. He was lying on his stomach.
“It’s terrible. You just never expect something as horrific as this to happen at the school first thing on a Monday morning.
“My heart goes out to the parents of the poor boy who was stabbed.
“You just can’t imagine what it must have been like for them to get a call like that from the school.
“I just hope the wee boy is going to be all right.”
