A NEW service is being launched to help overweight kids adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The JumpStart initiative will target youngsters in primaries three, four and five.
And it will offer support, advice and activities designed to encourage them to be happy and healthy.
The free fun-packed 10 week programme will begin in March and will run for two hours a week in a community venue in Annbank, Mossblown and Tarbolton.
Children can attend with their parent or carer and take part in fun, exciting activities.
They can also make new friends and build confidence while they learn about healthy choices and become motivated to be active.
Fiona Smith is a public health dietician for NHS Ayrshire and Arran.
She said: “Childhood obesity is a rising problem in Scotland.
“If a child is overweight or obese then they are more likely to develop serious health conditions in later life as well as affecting their quality of life now.
“We want to encourage parents or carers to consider bringing their child or children along if they have any serious concerns at all that they might be overweight.
“There will be an initial meeting with a dietician to decide if the programme will be right for them.
“The programme will involve many activities and education about healthy eating and physical activity in a friendly and fun environment.”
The programme will be introduced in other Ayrshire areas during the coming year.
