A ROOKIE driver who crashed his car killing his pal has been spared jail.
Stewart Ferguson, 19, lost control of his Ford Fiesta and landed in a field near Annbank in April 2007 – a month after passing his driving test.
His back seat passenger, Dean Templeton, 16, died in the crash.
But this week Ferguson was cleared of causing death by dangerous driving.
A jury at Kilmarnock High Court instead found him guilty of a lesser charge of careless driving.
Ferguson, of Ayr’s Westwood Ave, was fined £1000 and banned from driving for three years.
The tragedy happened just weeks after Dean’s dad Billy died of a heart attack when he confronted a group of youth’s outside their home.
