This is not just a Killie Pie - Honest

Matthew and John are producing a special pie for Ayr United fans

AYR fans hate admitting it – but Killie make a decent pie.

Now the tasty treat has created a headache for award-winning bakers at Brownings.

For they reckon Ayr supporters will boycott the famous Killie pie at tonight’s (Thursday’s) Ayrshire derby.

So for one night only, they’re producing the Honest Steak Pie to stop United fans going hungry.

The idea was the brainchild of Brownings’ co-managing directors John Gall and Matthew Short.

And work is always lively with John a diehard Killie fan, while Matthew has followed the Honest Men for 30 years.

John, 44, admitted: “We were hearing all sorts about Ayr fans refusing to buy the Killie pie when they came to Rugby Park.

“Obviously there’s a huge rivalry between the teams so we thought about doing something as a one-off for the Ayr supporters.

“So we’re making a special pie with a different type of gravy which will sell only in the Ayr end of the ground.

“We reckon it will produce a light-hearted edge to the game.”

Killie’s pie uses white pepper in its gravy, while the Honest Steak Pie will feature black and white pepper.

And Brownings reckon they’ve hit on a winner with the idea, which will be used to feed Ayr’s travelling support of 3500 fans at Rugby Park.

Matthew, of Ayr, laughed: “I don’t hate John for being a Killie fan – I just pity him.

“This game has caught the imagination of everyone and has proved once again that football exists outside of Glasgow.”
