Rescued cockerels at Ayr re-homing centre

Mungo and Jerry

TWO cockerels were dumped in a bin bag and left for dead during a sickening act of cruelty.

The male birds were found by shocked bin men doing their rounds.

And the birds, who’ve been nicknamed Mungo and Jerry by animal rescue chiefs, lived to fight another day.

They’re now being cared for at the SPCA re-homing centre in Ayr.

Centre manager Marion Hainey admitted: “It’s one of the strangest cases I’ve ever come across.

“I’ve worked here for more than 20 years and we’ve had most animals in that time – but never cockerels.

“It’s very upsetting to know that someone could be cruel and callous enough to throw these lovely birds out like rubbish.

“The bin men saw the bag moving and got a huge surprise when they looked inside.

“Mungo and Jerry could have easily suffocated to death in that bag if they had not been discovered by the council workers. They’ve had a very lucky escape.”

The animals are already attracting interest and the charity has already re-homed one of the birds.

They were found at the back of shops in Forehill and the authorities are appealing for information.

Abandoning an animal carries a fine of up to £5000 and six months in prison.
