Chemist fire brings Ayr centre to a halt

A SHOP fire brought Ayr town centre to a halt for two hours.

The Sandgate was closed as smoke billowed from the Co-op chemist.

And it took 18 firefighters to bring the blaze under control on Friday afternoon.

The fire, which started in the shop’s electrical meter box, spread thick smoke to the upstairs store room.

No-one was hurt, although the building suffered heavy smoke damage.

Ayr fire chief Jim Smith revealed: “We had three appliances on the scene, which required the Sandgate to be closed down for two hours.”
