Ayrshire road deaths show slight drop

A SHOCKING 19 people were killed on Ayrshire’s roads in 2008.

The tragic figures were released by police this week, and they insist that drivers could do more to make the roads safer.

The number of deaths is two less than in 2007.

Inspector Drew Robertson is the head of road policing for Ayrshire.

He said: “An overall reduction in road deaths within Ayrshire is very welcome and continues a trend we have seen over the last four years.

“For many motorists this will only be a number.

“However, for those affected by the loss of a loved one – be it parents, brothers, sisters or school friends – it can have a traumatic effect on their life and is never forgotten.

“One of the main factors in these crashes is that many fail to adapt their driving style to the type of road they are on.

“This can result in a loss of control and, tragically, a loss of life.”

Six people died in South Ayrshire, eight in East Ayrshire and five in North Ayrshire.

The news comes as police reveal that they arrested 30 per cent fewer people for drink and drug driving in Ayrshire over the festive period.

Inspector Robertson added: “Too many drivers continue to break the law, putting themselves, other motorists and pedestrians in unnecessary danger.”

If you know someone who breaks the law on the roads contact your local police office or Crimestoppers on 08000 555 111.
