Ayrshire police get tough on firework sales

THERE’S no excuse for selling fireworks to under-agers.

That’s the tough message from police and trading standards chiefs.

For they’ve teamed up to ensure that all firework suppliers stick to the rules in South Ayrshire.

Councillor Peter Convery explained: “Retailers are strongly advised to make use of the Young Scot proof of age scheme promoted by South Ayrshire Council.

“A ‘no proof, no sale’ policy is the only foolproof way of avoiding making underage sales.

“This year, more than ever, we are issuing a clear message to shopkeepers that we will take strong enforcement action against anyone making underage sales.”

Only fireworks which comply with the British Standard can be sold and certain types, including bangers and air bombs, have been banned.

Trading standards also pointed out that you must be over 18 to buy fireworks and under-agers are also banned from possessing them in public places.

Councillor Margaret Toner is the chairman of South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership, who are behind the Bonfire Watch campaign.

She explained that police, the fire service and the council have also teamed up to stop injuries and anti-social behaviour on bonfire night.

She said: “Properly organised and safe bonfires are enjoyed by many people.

“This campaign will help people to remain safe and reduce damage and injuries associated with illegal bonfires, as well as tackling anti-social behaviour.

“More than anything we want people to enjoy the season and avoid the misery of injuries and anti-social behaviour often associated with fireworks and bonfire night.

“By working closely with the police and fire service, the council is determined to achieve a high safety standard throughout our area.
