Ayr couple ready to settle down after 65 years

Sydney and Thelma Ormond

AFTER 65 years of marriage, Sydney and Thelma Ormond are finally settling down.

The Ayr couple have lived a life on the road – moving more than 20 times during their decades of wedded bliss.

Now they’ve decided that home is where the heart is as they prepare to celebrate their Blue Sapphire anniversary.

Sydney, 87, revealed: “We’ve been all over the country but we’ve decided we’re staying here – at least until our Platinum anniversary!

“I was born in Lancashire and Thelma came from Glasgow, but we’ve spent a lot of our time between Ayr and Prestwick.

“It’s amazing to think it’s now been 65 years. You don’t think that far ahead when you get married – certainly not that length of time.”

Sydney, who spent 25 years at Heathrow working as a Planning Engineer for British Airways, spent his younger days with the Royal Navy.

It was then he met Thelma, who built Rolls Royce engines for war planes like Spitfires and Hurricanes.

The couple, who have two sons, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, married in Glasgow.

They’ll celebrate with a family party as relatives jet in from as far afield as Thailand.

And they insist the secret to a long relationship is having plenty in common.

Thelma, 87, revealed: “We get on with each other and that’s why it works.”
