TOP racehorse trainer Harry Whiteman who trained many winners at Cree Lodge, Ayr, dies at the age of 86. In a 40-year career he trained more than 800 winners.

50 YEARS AGO

PEDESTRIAN crossings in Ayr High Street, at the Central Arcade and Carrick Street, are not to be removed and replaced by a new Zebra crossing midway between the two. Chief constable John Muir tells the town council a new crossing would be near the Gaumont Cinema, where there are frequently queues.

100 YEARS AGO

LARGE crowds watch from the pier and esplanade as the annual Ayr Regatta takes places in ideal conditions. But it can be difficult to follow with the naked eye, as the six-mile course stretches from near the Lady Isle to near the Heads of Ayr.
