DOUGLAS Campbell has quit as leader of the South Ayrshire Labour group.
He failed to put his name forward for nomination to the top job at his party’s AGM on Monday night.
Instead the position fell to lone candidate, South Carrick councillor John McDowall.
The move comes just days before councillors are due to rule on the forged signature scandal that has plagued the party for the past few months.
And it’s believed that it is one of the reasons behind Councillor Campbell’s decision to stand down.
The councillor for Ayr North sparked an investigation after discovering that his signature had been forged on an important council paper – prompting a backlash from some of his fellow Labour councillors.
Councillors Ian Cavana and Helen Moonie were reported to South Ayrshire’s standards in governance committee in connection with the alleged forgery on the scrutiny panel call-in paper.
The committee will report their findings to a full meeting of South Ayrshire Council next week.
