A SUNDAY stroller embarked on a gruelling 12-day trek in a bid to raise cash for his favourite charity.
And thanks to 62-year-old Roger Clegg’s efforts, the South Ayrshire Dementia Support Association is better off to the tune of £1500.
Ayr man Roger walked the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt in the French and Swiss Alps.
But he says the challenge was harder than he thought.
Retired scientist Roger said: “It was a tremendous experience physically, and technically it was much more demanding than I should ever have tackled as an introduction to mountain walking.
“But I will treasure memories of its highs and lows for years to come, and I am thrilled by the added bonus of having helped SADSA, through the generosity of all my sponsors.”
Roger, who describes himself as a Sunday morning stroller, was urged to take part in the 107-mile trek by a persuasive friend.
But he is now urging other people to consider this worthwhile cause when they are embarking on adventures.
Roger continued: “I know that SADSA will be delighted to hear from any other members of the community who are interested in attaching SADSA sponsorship to their personal projects and aspirational pursuits.”
Richard Page, from SADSA, said: “Our 26 employees work together with volunteers to provide home-care and day-care, at two dedicated locations in Ayr and Prestwick, to people living in the South Ayrshire area who are suffering from dementia.
“Any supplementation of our major income-stream from South Ayrshire Council enables us to enhance our service and the time that we can devote to our clients.
“This gift of £1500 is a huge boost and is an indication of how highly the people of Ayrshire value our work.
“it is a real tonic for the morale of our staff. “
