Bride left in the lurch two days before her wedding as Prestwick cake shop mysteriously shuts

It should have been the icing on the cake on the biggest day of her life.

But Jacqueline Larmour’s wedding day threatened to crumble when the specialist bakery making her wedding cake shut up shop.

The young bride only learned by chance that Cake of Your Dreams wouldn’t make good on her order just two days before she was due to tie the knot with Martin Kerr.

She is among the numerous customers left high and dry by the business run by Pauline Garretty.

Jacqueline is furious that no one from the Prestwick business bothered to let her know that her cake wouldn’t be delivered until the day before the wedding.

She explained: “We just happened to be driving past the shop two days before the wedding and saw it was all in darkness.

“We thought that was a bit weird considering they should have been making our cake by then.

“We tried calling and emailing them loads of times but we got no answer.

“How can someone do this to you just before your wedding?”

Husband Martin added: “I eventually got a text message from them on Friday, the day before our wedding, saying they had closed due to critical illness.

“If that was the case why not just tell us that before?”

The Ayr couple had ordered their special cake well in advance of their nuptials at Western House Hotel.

Jacqueline pointed out: “The worst thing about it is we wanted an icing figure of our dog next to the bride and groom figurines so we gave them photos of him.

“They’re sentimental to us and we don’t know if we’ll get them back.”

And it’s a similar story from Colin Irvine, who contacted the Post this week saying he’d tried to pick up a 40th birthday cake he’d ordered and found the shop shut with no explanation.

And two other brides called to say they have also been left in the lurch.

Despite repeated attempts, the Post was unable to speak to anyone from Cake of Your Dreams to find out the reason behind the closure.

Jacqueline and Martin had a happy ending for their big day though. For Troon-based cake maker Sugar and Spice stepped into the breach, and created a tower of cupcakes in a day.

Jacqueline said: “If we hadn’t happened to drive past Cake of Your Dreams we would never have known there was a problem. We would have turned up to collect our cake and found the place in darkness, then what we would have done? Luckily Sugar and Spice said they would do it so we had something to feed our guests.”
